Term 2 Week 5

Welcome to our week 5 blog post.

Te kupu o te wiki

This week was PINK week and once again a great effort was made to dress up for Friday and to find pink objects..well done everyone.

We have been showing some great skills linked to the Key Competency of Relating to Others as we shared our learning with each other, our big buddies and our new Kowhai friends from Room 12a.

Our  older buddies helped us to learn how to use the Ready To Read books on the iPad.

We shared some of our favourite games with new friends from Room 12a.
On Friday afternoon we had Buddy Time and together with our Room 5 buddies designed new outfits for ourselves.

On Thursday afternoon Sarah from the Environment Centre helped us to look at what we are throwing away into our classroom rubbish bins

We have finished off our wiggle pictures and this week will be recreating them using Tux Paint during ICT.
Our poem this week helped us focus on the sound 'Z' when we thought about Buzzy Bee.

Here are some more picture from another busy learning week in Room 10.

Term 2 Week 4

Welcome to our blog that gives you a peek into what we have been up to last during Week 4 of this term.

The whakatauki for this month is:

Te kupu o te wiki was kaiako meaning teacher. You could use it like this; He kaiako ahau , I am a teacher.

The slide show below shows some examples of us learning about length in maths by comparing the lengths of all the different slides in school, measuring things with our feet and measuring our feet with a variety of non-standard units including cubes and dominoes. Later in the week we took a look  at weight by using bucket scales to compare the weight of different objects. You will also see the fun we got up to in this week's Discovery Time and our collection of objects for the colour of the week which was brown. We hope you enjoy our photos

Our poem this week was linked to the leaf rubbings we dd in art and to the tricky word 'down' that we learnt on Tuesday

Finally this week we focused on the Maori Legend of Maui and the Big Fish. Tracy told us the story and then we watched 2 video clips. We chose this one to help our friends and whanau to learn the story as well.

Term 2 Week 3

No doubt you will be aware that we are running a Food For Thought fundraiser challenge at school. This has very special meaning to me as all the money goes to an orphange  that I use to help out at during the 3 years I was teaching in Cambodia.  You can find out more about the challenge by watching this brief clip I made for all the children and teachers at school.

What has been going on in Room 10 this week? Here we are reading anytime, any place, anywhere.

We have been making the most of the sunny weather enjoying milk outside.....

and continuing our No Child Left Inside sports programme.
In maths we have been learning about length and height.
We listened to the Gingerbread Man story and then....
....... found items that were longer than the gingerbread man.....
......the same length as the gingerbread man......
..........and shorter than the gingerbread man.

We continued our wiggle pictures by filling in the spaces with the primary colours: red, blue and yellow.
In Discovery Time Sam brought along her special bubble wand and we were able to use the bubble mixture from last week to make some amazing bubbles.
We were near the end of the week preparing some surprise cards for our mums.

This week's math's rich task was about the 3 Little Pigs and involved working out how many bunches of flowers and boxes mother pig would get. Some of us were using double 3 to solve this problem.

I was very impressed by the range of orange clothing being worn in Room 10 on Friday..well done everyone for another fantastic effort.

We even made orange jelly when we were thinking about the sound 'j'.
You can see many more photos of these activities in this week's slideshow below.

Term 2 Week 2

First of all lets take a look at our Maori focus for last week and the month of May. The whakatauki for May is:
Our word for Week 2 was  akomanga or classroom. An example of how to use this in a sentence would be: Haere ki te akomanga. Go to the classroom.

We had lots of fun thinking about green , which was our colour for Week 2 some of our friends from other classes also joined in.

We were very pleased with ourselves for completing the challenge of finding 100 green objects, including a real live praying mantis!

For our rich task in maths last week we explored making a repeating patterns by adding objects into the  carriages on our trains.

Our handwriting continued with a focus on the rather tricky formation of the letter ' b'
.
In Discovery Time we thought some more about the digraph 'ai' we had been learning by making our own train track. When you watch this clip you will also see how well we did at hockey and big ball skills.
